OneDegree Pet CEO Plan® Double Upgrade Exclusive Additional Feline Infectious Peritonitis (FIP) coverage New Prestige Plan Covering MRI and CT Costs Providing Pets with “Unbeatable Protection, Lifelong Care” Medical Coverage
July 7, 2025 – Since its establishment in April 2020, OneDegree has been dedicated to providing more comprehensive protection for pets. Its unique Pet CEO Plan® offers the highest annual coverage limit¹ in Hong Kong at HK$100,0008 and is the only plan in Hong Kong to promise lifelong renewal², alleviating the financial burden of pet medical expenses for pet owners. In response to the latest advancements in pet healthcare, OneDegree, leader in the pet insurance market, continues to innovate. Today, the company announces two revolutionary upgrades: the introduction of Hong Kong’s exclusive³ Additional Feline Infectious Peritonitis (FIP) coverage ⁴, and the launch of the new Prestige Plan, which covers medical expenses for Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) and Computed Tomography (CT) scans⁵. These product upgrades offer pet owners more comprehensive coverage for pet medical expenses, fully supporting pet owners in providing their pets with “Unbeatable Protection, Lifelong Care.”
FIP: 90% Infection Rate from Mutated Feline Coronavirus, 95% Mortality Rate
According to authoritative international veterinary research⁶, Feline Infectious Peritonitis (FIP) is a severe disease caused by a mutation of the Feline Coronavirus (FCoV). Approximately 40% of cats are infected with FCoV, and in households with multiple cats, the infection rate can reach 90%. Of these, 1% to 5% may develop FIP, with higher risks for kittens under 2 years old and purebred cats. Registered veterinarian Dr. Kaylen Kwan states that, if untreated, FIP has a mortality rate of up to 95%.
FIP Oral Medication: 80% to 90% Treatment Success Rate
FIP has an extremely high mortality rate, but oral medication for FIP only became widely available in Hong Kong last year. Dr. Kaylen Kwan explains, “Before the widespread use of the GS-441524 oral medication for FIP treatment, Hong Kong veterinarians could only provide supportive treatments such as steroids, antibiotics, or nutritional fluids to alleviate cats’ discomfort, but these drugs could not cure FIP.”
Upgrade 1: FIP Oral Medication Becomes Widely Available in Hong Kong, OneDegree Launches Exclusive³ Additional FIP coverage ⁴
Last year marked a breakthrough in FIP treatment. Dr. Kaylen Kwan notes, “The use of GS-441524 oral medication for FIP treatment has become widespread among Hong Kong veterinarians. The oral treatment typically lasts 84 days, with dosages adjusted based on the cat’s weight and condition. Close monitoring of blood parameters is required during treatment, achieving a success rate of 80% to 90%, which is remarkably high. The treatment is effective, with satisfactory survival rates, and it spares cats from invasive procedures.”
Following the widespread availability of GS-441524 oral medication in Hong Kong, OneDegree has pioneered the introduction of Hong Kong’s exclusive³ Additional FIP coverage ⁴. Pet owners who purchase OneDegree’s unique CEO Plan® can opt for the Additional FIP coverage⁴ add-on. After a first-year premium discount⁷, the daily premium costs less than HK$2, providing coverage for medication expenses⁴ required if a cat unfortunately contracts FIP.
If a cat is diagnosed with FIP, pet owners can seek diagnosis and treatment at a registered veterinary clinic or hospital. OneDegree will reimburse 70% of the costs for prescribed FIP treatment medication GS-441524, with coverage available for cats aged 1 year and above, up to a limit of HK$25,000 for an 84-day treatment course. The maximum insurable age is 11 years, with a promise of lifelong renewal².
Emily Chow, Deputy CE of OneDegree (Right) and Terry Sou, Head of Insurance Product and Actuarial (Left)
Emily Chow, Deputy CE OneDegree states, “In the past, pet owners felt helpless when their cats were diagnosed with FIP. Many OneDegree employees are cat owners themselves and deeply understand the feelings of cat owners. Upon learning that Hong Kong pharmaceutical companies have introduced large-scale supplies of affordable FIP oral medication with high treatment success rates, we leveraged the flexibility of virtual insurance to swiftly upgrade our products, incorporating FIP into our additional coverage. We aim to provide pet owners with more comprehensive protection.”
Upgrade 2: Responding to Market Needs with the Prestige Plan, Covering MRI and CT Medical Expenses⁵
In addition to the new FIP additional coverage⁴, OneDegree has introduced the Prestige Plan alongside its existing Essential, Plus, and Ultra Plan. The Prestige Plan includes all coverage provided by the Premium Pet Plan – such as general and specialist outpatient visits, hospitalization, laboratory tests, X-rays, ultrasounds, and prescription medications – while newly adding coverage for MRI and CT medical expenses⁵. The plan offers an annual coverage limit of HK$100,000⁸, the highest in Hong Kong¹.
Dr. Kaylen Kwan explains, “Traditional imaging technologies like X-rays and ultrasounds are commonly used in animal diagnostics, but in some cases, they cannot provide sufficient information. When lesions are too small, too deep, or cannot be clearly diagnosed with traditional methods, CT or MRI becomes essential tools.”
Emily Chow adds, “Previously, OneDegree’s Pet CEO Plan® covered tests such as laboratory work, X-rays, and ultrasounds, with the highest annual coverage limit in Hong Kong¹ at HK$100,000⁸, sufficient for most medical expenses. We continuously listen to market feedback, and many pet owners view their pets as vital family members, wanting the most advanced diagnostics when health issues arise. Therefore, we launched the ‘Prestige Plan,’ incorporating MRI and CT⁵ into the coverage to offer pet owners more choices.”
Featuring a Domestic Short Hair Cat in TV Commercial to Promote Product Upgrades and Universal Love for All Breeds
To align with this double upgrade of OneDegree’s unique pet insurance, OneDegree has cast a beloved local cat as the star of its latest TV commercial, raising public awareness that even fearless “cat bosses” may contract FIP, which was previously untreatable. Domestic cats and dogs consistently rank among the top three insured breeds with OneDegree, reflecting Hong Kong pet owners’ love for their furry family members, regardless of breed. The commercial will air on online platforms and television and can be viewed on OneDegree’s social media platforms (https://www.facebook.com/share/v/19g4k6VC4D/). In addition to the TV commercial, OneDegree will roll out outdoor advertisements.
