OneDegree safeguards everyone’s health equally
(Hong Kong – 26 October 2022) OneDegree Hong Kong Limited (OneDegree) today announces the offering of critical illness insurance to individuals diagnosed with Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV) and has become the first Hong Kong insurance company to accept HIV+ individuals to apply for its critical illness insurance. Besides, if an existing client is unfortunately diagnosed with HIV during the policy period, OneDegree will also accept policy renewal.
“Everyone should enjoy the same right to health,” said Alvin Kwock, Co-founder of OneDegree Group. “Although the advancement of technology has significantly increased the survival rates of HIV+ individuals, their insurable interest is still being ignored. This is the reason why OneDegree decided to become the first insurance company to offer critical illness protection to HIV+ individuals, revolutionizing the Hong Kong insurance market. We would like to take this opportunity to lead the industry to breakthrough the limit of traditional insurance and to raise public concern for the interests of this minority, thus building a more equitable society.”
Bringing equal rights to the minority
As a virtual insurer, OneDegree always strives to reduce cost with technology, and to use resources effectively to serve those communities who are not adequately protected. The LGBTQ+ community is one of the communities which OneDegree shows great concern for. Last Sunday, OneDegree shared about the right to insurance of the LGBTQ+ community at the Pink Dot Hong Kong 2022 for the good of promoting the culture of diversity and equality. Further to its earlier announcement to extend its policy definition of “family” to cover cohabiting and same-sex partners, OneDegree takes another step for minorities by accepting HIV+ individuals to apply for its critical illness insurance. We hope that such a breakthrough will bring equal rights to the minority communities, hence everyone can enjoy equal and adequate health protection.
Critical illness insurance coverage up to HK$100,000
Following the improvement of medical technology, HIV is no longer an incurable illness. In Feb 2022, there was the first case of a woman who recovered from HIV. HIV+ individuals can enjoy normal life expectancy through continued medication. However, no application for medical or critical illness insurance is accepted for the people living with HIV from traditional insurers, OneDegree thereby decided to take the lead in making critical illness insurance a possibility for HIV+ individuals. HIV+ individuals aged between 18 to 65 who have undergone the underwriting process, are eligible for up to HK$100,000 critical illness insurance coverage.
Existing critical illness insurance customers can renew their policies if they are unfortunately diagnosed with HIV during the policy period, enabling them to live a safe and worry-free life.
30% off the first-year premium and free body check
OneDegree critical illness insurance offers a market-first feature of unlimited total number of claims[1]. During the policy period, any type of covered critical illness is allowed to be claimed once, including the 7 major critical illnesses such as cancer, coronary artery surgery and heart attack, which encompasses 98% of critical illness claims[2].
From now until 30 November 2022, new customers can enjoy 30% discount on the first year’s premium of OneDegree critical illness insurance. A free body check will be offered to the customers who have met specific premium requirement.
